View Full Version : Tobacco in the mix

At the A'dam get-together, I was surprised how the folks from the UK would put some tobacco in with the mix. I don't use tobacco, so it seemed very odd to me. The explanation was that things burn better and more evenly with the tobacco included.
Here's my question, does everyone who does this also smoke cigarettes? How do you smoke a bit of tobacco without getting hooked?

Here in Oz, we use tobacco in our spliffs. I've even had friends that use tobacco in their bongs! (don't worry, i don't understand that one either!!)
It does help it burn better and isn't as strong as smoking pure weed....
Neither myself or my friends smoke cigarettes but I have had one friend, who during a time of no weed, had to use nicotine patches 'cos he was having withdrawal from the nicotine rather than the weed!

I've witnessed it as well (I live in Canada, but have been around Europe) and it doesn't make sense to me, it ruines the sweet taste of mj imo.... if anything I'd have the cig AFTER I got high, when I used to smoke I loved doing that.

I've always put tobacco in my joints. I grew up in Germany where it's quite normal. Here's why it's better for me: firstly you can have a joint last longer without using too much weed. Also I think it's a cultural thing as in Europe we tend to smoke pretty much anywhere, especially in parks and forests or just down an empty street. It's much easier to do this with a joint than a bowl or bong which is very conspicuous. I think that the attitudes toward smoking can be different here than in America as well, where a lot of people look at smoking as a way to get "fucked up" rather than just a seperate state of consciousness to be in while wondering around in the concensus reality (not necessarily better or worse, just different) If you smoke a pure joint you get far more stoned, too stoned to go to school or drive your car or be all that productive (for me at least)
On the downside, I think it was probably the reason I started smoking cigarettes. That said, I have friends who have been smoking with tobacco in their joints for years and never touch cigarettes. I haven't smoked a cigarette in three days though, I tend to go in waves (no smoking then about 2 packs when I take pills... well worth it!) Anyway that's my tobacco in joints stance, hope it shed some light on it!

i would never mix my weed with tobacco.. i usually roll my weed in dutch master cigarello's when i'm out.. burns nice and slow.
i don't smoke many joints, and when i do, the bud does seem to burn quicker than it should.. but ruin the taste of the maryjane with tobacco? that should be a sin.

It's a great source of nicotine though :D

Yeah, I was shocked at this cultural difference when I first listened to the Dopecast, and then saw everyone doing it over in the Dam. The spliffs were certainly smoother with the tobacco, but I guess I am just used to smoking the pure stuff. Whenever I am smoking and don't want to get too messed up, I just roll up less, which makes more sense to me. I can also understand the tradition aspect of it though.

Yea you're right it's really rooted in tradition. If I look at it objectively obviously it makes more sense just to roll a smaller joint than use toboacco  Personally I really enjoy the extra kick you get with tobacco in the joint, when I smoke pure sometimes it feels like nothing is hitting my lungs, or it's kind of a deeper, wider burn (hard to describe obviously) With tobacco I get the reliable pinch in the alvioli, like oh yea, that's a good hit, mmmhmmm. :D
Also, I read something yesterday that said there are different strains of tobacco that differ from each other quite a bit. Some shamans use nicotiana rustica, which is far stronger than nicotiana tobacco... would be interesting to use that in a mix.

My first experience of weed was in a tobacco joint made me feel ill as never had tobacco before thought it was the weed it was only when I ate it that I grew to love it.
Yet through everyone smoking tobacco joints I ended up with a tobacco addiction for around 5 years.
I can tell you now 15 years later giving up tobacco was the best thing I ever did for my health.
Love my herbalaire why would you want to smoke a joint when you can share a bag of vapour ;)

That is an MAO inhibitor it would have some kind of psychedelic effect i think, but way more harsh to smoke

I think I read in DMT The Spirit Molecule that normal tobacco is also an MAO inhibitor, which is why schizophrenics chain smoke, so that they can self-regulate their serotonin levels a bit. I don't know much about chemistry but I'd say that that's why cigarettes are so much nicer when combined with MDMA. I bet taking a pill and smoking some rustica would be an interesting experience....
