Police sniff out cannabis factory
Nov 21 2007 by Abby Alford, South Wales Echo

TWO young police community support officers have sniffed out one of the biggest cannabis factories ever seen in Cardiff.

Pcso Jake Lynch, 20, who has been in the job for only eight months, and fellow Psco Mark Hallett, 24, sensed something suspicious in the air while on routine patrol in Canton.

The smell was traced to a house on the corner of Brunswick Street and Beda Road and officers who raided the property yesterday discovered around 200 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £200,000.

The discovery of the stash of plants is the latest in a series of finds for South Wales Police and highlights the growing problem of cannabis factories, which are increasingly popping up in otherwise respectable residential areas.

Pcso Jake Lynch, of the Canton and Ely Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We came up here about 10 days ago to deal with an abandoned car.

“I caught the whiff of cannabis, so hung around to get a better sniff.

“We came to the conclusion the smell was coming from this house and filed an intelligence report when we got back to the station.”

Chief Superintendent Josh Jones said: “This was a great piece of community policing by two officers new to their roles.”

After Jake and Mark’s discovery, colleagues began to closely scrutinise the house.

The police helicopter was called in and, using its thermal imaging camera, detected an abnormal amount of heat coming from the property, confirming the presence of a sophisticated cannabis-growing operation.

But before yesterday’s raid could go ahead, Sergeant Reg Martin, a former electrician, had to check the property had not been booby-trapped, as those behind the cannabis factories are increasingly wiring door handles and windows to the mains electricity in case the premises are targeted by police.

Sgt Martin said when they went in, they discovered cannabis plants in almost every available space, even in an en-suite bathroom next to the shower.

“This is a very professional job,” he said.

“The factory has been established for at least a couple of months and we believe they have already harvested around £100,000 worth of cannabis.”

But those living near the extended end-of-terrace house in Canton, which has several novelty tea pots lined up below the net curtain in the front window, had not suspected a thing.

One woman who approached the house yesterday to see what all the fuss was about, said she often passed by on her way to the shops but had not seen or smelt anything suspicious.

Inside, officers spent hours dismantling the yards of electrical cable, dozens of electrical transformers and heat lamps that had been rigged up to nurture the plants.

Forensic officers on the scene said the temperature in the bedrooms, which were rammed with plants, must have been well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit thanks to the heat lamps.

No natural air had been allowed to flow into the house as all the windows were closed and had been blacked out.

But, a complex ventilation system comprising yards of silver metallic ducting had been rigged up to remove the potentially toxic fumes from the plants.

Ironically, police believe it was this that lead to the discovery, as the ventilation system had been linked into the chimney, taking the fumes out into the street.

n One woman, believed to be of Vietnamese origin, was arrested following the raid on suspicion of cultivating cannabis.

n In another, unconnected raid on a house in Penygarn Road in Ely, packages of cannabis and £25,000 cash was discovered by police. One man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.

i like the bit where it says...

“I caught the whiff of cannabis, so hung around to get a better sniff."
i bet he did

£200,000/200 Plants = £1000 worth of weed off each plant!? Is that possible?

They are making a big deal about 200 plants? Not that I'm saying that isn't a big amount, it definitly is, but I'm saying that it seems like an average size grow for a commercial grow-op. Nothing too out of the ordinary for a commercial grow.

i know another place had 600 plants and a while back another place about 1,300 etc but one thing i think your missing is it was the biggest in Cardiff not just anywhere, and one thing i find police do is to say what the maximum value is to scare people ie they were probably £10 deals the smallest deal you get, if it was say half oz deals or oz deals it would be less

:D HAHAHA... Good one. :D

Hmm... Don't plants take in carbon and give off oxygen. I guess oxygen is considered toxic in new speak. (Black is white.) What darelicts.

Why did no one ask him how he knew what cannabis smells like? Oh wait, then he would have had to admit that he's a dirty hypocrite as he's almost certainly smoked weed and yet decided to enforce one of the most absurd laws humanity has ever passed. Fuckers.

there,s more to this than meets the eye i think guys,it said the ventilation was vented into the chimny, the last time i looked chimneys are not at ground level.
how high are your average chimney in this country 25-30 feet abouve street lvl,and what does hot air do guys?yup it rises there is no fucking way you would smell it at ground lvl,and then be able to trace it?
this is looking very fishy to me.
the guy in question is a part time comunity officer,i recon this guy some how knew about this factory coz he smokes pot.
not even the nieghbours could smell anything, food for thought aye guys?;)

i see where you are coming from but keeping a open mind, what about a leak from somewhere in the house? or something maybe? one thing some people do when growing is to plant lavender etc outside to mask any smell, theres a number of ways smell could leave the house, also what if there was a down wind?

200 plants with no carbon filter will STINK for at least 2-3 weeks, and i mean STINK. Chimney or no chimney these cops were no masterminds. Less than 100 pounds spent on a filter and there would have been no smell whatsoever. But do these viatnamese gangs give a shit, no! back home they prob got hanged for this kind of crime. Slap on the wrists here even for that much.
I love the figures the police put on how much cannabis is worth. 200 plants- few oz on each is that £200,000 i dont think so! i mean 3 months growing and you could retire to a cash bought mansion, what the hell are they like...

ive never really worked that out, how do they come up with the figures? i thought its was just the case the smallest amount you can buy divided by how much was there = value but im starting to think it doesn't work like that any ideas how they do it?

It is just scare mongering mate. Look at the language the journalist uses:

"[They]detected an abnormal amount of heat coming from the property, confirming the presence of a sophisticated cannabis-growing operation."

That doesn't really confirm anything, other than the house is really hot. It is more likely that there were grow lights there, but still it didn't confirm their presence.

“This is a very professional job,” he said.

Thanks for that.

“The factory has been established for at least a couple of months and we believe they have already harvested around £100,000 worth of cannabis.”

Again, that's just guess work.

"Sgt Martin said when they went in, they discovered cannabis plants in almost every available space, even in an en-suite bathroom next to the shower."

This is a bit of an exageration. Surely they would be in the shower if every available space was taken up! lol.

"But those living near the extended end-of-terrace house in Canton, which has several novelty tea pots lined up below the net curtain in the front window, had not suspected a thing.

One woman who approached the house yesterday to see what all the fuss was about, said she often passed by on her way to the shops but had not seen or smelt anything suspicious."

Perhaps there is more than we know. If people living near the house noticed nothing suspicious, how did a part time plod notice something suspicious on a one off visit to the area?

"Forensic officers on the scene said the temperature in the bedrooms, which were rammed with plants, must have been well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit thanks to the heat lamps."

More guess work.

"But, a complex ventilation system comprising yards of silver metallic ducting had been rigged up to remove the potentially toxic fumes from the plants."

Bollocks.

I think many estimates are made based on any given plant being capable of yielding a pound of herb if allowed to grow naturally. That said, these cops were being conservative. :)

All this reminds me of a book title:

"The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship"
by
Charles Bukowski

Isn't prohibition fucking wonderful?

I'm feeling very quoteful this evening, so I'm going to fire up "Sounds of the WWW" and quote Joe Cocker

"LET'S GO GET STONED"
