I just got around to listening to this one, which I especially enjoyed hearing because I went to Peru earlier this year and had my first psychedelic experiences there. The shaman James went with sounds amazing; the one I had I don't think was "real," or maybe the ayahuasca wasn't, because my friend and I didn't trip at all.
That was disappointing but luckily I also had the chance to try the cousin of peyote, san pedro, which is native to the Peruvian Andes. I always hear about people going to Peru to do ayahuasca, but don't forget san pedro! If anyone happens to go down there, I'd highly recommend trying it. You can go with a curandero or just buy some yourself in a local market, fully prepared and super-cheap at about $1.50 per dose (which was perfect for this college-aged backpacker). I went on two day-long san pedro trips, one up on a beautiful hillside in the sacred valley of the Incas, the other in an even more beautiful sand dune desert, and they were both incredible experiences, as you might expect. Great teaching plant, deeply spiritual, and I felt an especially intense connection to the Earth. No real strong visuals, that is until I smoked some cannabis towards the end of one of the trips- WOW what a combo that was.
Anyways, I could ramble on about those experiences forever, but I just wanted to spread the word in case anyone was unaware of this possibility. And to Lorenzo, I only discovered your podcast a month ago but I'm rapidly catching up- you're doing such a great service to everyone, thanks so much! It may very well change the course of my life  (hopefully for the better ;) ).
