Never heard of it, but what's it taste like? It's just Chinese green tea isn't it?

yes, I think its was part of Chinese culture, but it was considered more of an elixer rather than a tea.

It has a bacterium culture, I think from yeast and a special bacteria - that ferments the raw fruits - giving it a taste a bit like a very sweet, gentle, naturally fermented lambic beer - but with far less alcohol (like less than .2%)

This is my favorite brand - a list of stores is here:

Kombucha is the Western name for sweetened tea or tisane that has been fermented by a macroscopic solid mass of microorganisms called a "kombucha colony," usually consisting principally of Bacterium xylinum and yeast cultures. It has gained much popular support within many communities, mentioned by talk show hosts and celebrities. The increase in popularity can be seen by the many commercial brands coming onto the retail market and thousands of web pages about this fermented beverage.

Tried some kombucha myself this weekend, as I fell ill during my vacation and thought it might help my situation improve.

It was drinkable, but a bit too vinegar-y for old Bibbowski's taste. I can't say that it made me feel any better, but I would recommend that anyone interested in pickle juice flavored beer give it a rip.

My girlfriend and I got a small kombucha child (portion from the kombucha mother) and currently growing it in a mason jar. Tomorrow we plan on feeding it more sugar and black tea (both organic) and moving it to a larger mason jar so we can get a full sized mother.

If you're into kombucha, its really worth making your own. Its actually not that difficult either... there's a few youtube videos out there that I'm sure could help you get started.

Though to be honest this is our first attempt at doing this... but it doesn't look that difficult. ;)

I live in a hippy city, and the hippies like to jump on hippy fads, and right now Kambucha is the new hippy fad. The Tea is locally bottled and an 18 oz bottle is like $3.75... Maybe more. Way more than I am trying to spend on a drink...

People are so smug about it, I have had no interest in trying it...

I've been to many peoples homes that have had that stuff fermenting on top of their TV. Got to love being from cities like ours. Never tried it either, have no desire either.

It does taste awfully like drinking straight vinegar at first, but it definitely grows on you. Let us know know how your brew comes out Muloka... I've been meaning to try to ferment some of my own but haven't found the time yet

There are a lot of different types of kombucha, if the taste of one brand is too strong or bitter, try another one more to your taste. In my recent trip to Russia homemade and store bought Kombucha was everywhere, probably having been acculturated from China or surrounding peoples century or millenia ago.

I have yet to do it, but i have 2 bottles of kombucha standing by.

You can use the mother organism from the bottle to make a batach. The organism eats the sugars and excretes alcohol and some kind of pro-biotic agents. I'll buy bottles of it on vacation, but not when I'm around home. If I have success making my own, I'll post about it.
