It may be hard to get a handle on at first, but the sound quality is great. I have one now, but I sure wish I'd had it for my trip to Peru. In any event, I really dig the H4, and I hope to hear many a ninja field recording in the future.

Stay well, QN!

Hi KMO,

I read about the H4 in the latest Podcasting magazine - they too said it was excellent with many handy inputs/outputs but the reviewer said he would go into mild panic whenever he misplaced the H4's manual as it's hardly user-friendly!

The review also recommended a slightly less expensive and easier to use recorder (but not as sophisticated as the H4): Samson Technologies' Zoom H2 Handy Recorder....I plan on picking one up on my travels, but for now I make use of Resco Audio Recorder installed on my Pocket PC ;)

The sound quality is awesome, and the option is there to record in 24-bit, which for the money is unbeatable I reckon.

I think the 192kbps MP3 setting is probably the most cost-efficient in terms of memory usage to quality, and changing the gain to mid or high, while limiting the input to -3Db would probably be the settings I use the most!

As with all things, practice makes perfect!

Well, it seems as though you have a better handle on it than I do. I got to the point where I knew how to start recording and then transfer the recordings to my laptop and then I never looked at the manual again. Seems like maybe I should dig out the instructions, as my unit is set to record files in .wav. Memory hog!
