View Full Version : Dopestock 2008 is Officially On!

Perhaps the most exciting bit from Dopecast #90 has been our beloved Dopefiend's confirmation that Dopestock 2008 will happen this 4/20/2008.
My Fiend, thank you for continuing to be mindful of your global audience. Since I live in the States, getting together cash for this trip won't be easy but if I get a head start now, I think I can make it, provided that I survive telling my lady.
Is anyone making plans already? Staying at the Flying Pig? Other hostels? Hotels?
During my last (and so far only) trip to Amsterdam, I camped about 30 minutes outside the city in a cabin at Het Amsterdamse Bos. While it was a bit of a pain getting to and from the city by bus, we ended paying about 15 Euros per person per night and awoke every morning riverside in a lush green forest.
On the last day of my trip, I ate 4 grams of fresh Philosopher's Stones mushrooms and hiked through the Bos, which is a fairly expansive nature reserve. This was the #2 greatest shroom trip I've had so far. At one point the clouds parted and I wept at the beauty of the sky, followed by 6 hours of heavy Gaian Mind-melding with the natural world. It's a terrible shame that by the time 4/20/2008 rolls around (or 20/4/2008 for my global pals) psilocybin shrooms might be illegal in the Netherlands.
Anyway, I'd like to stay in Amsterdam the city proper this time, and I think if enough people are interested, we're still early enough in that we could perhaps pool on some lodging, or crash the same hostel. Interested parties?

Dude, I'm booked already! Not missing this!
I'm at the Flying Pig Downtown 18-22 April, but I just found out some annoying information:
They have an age limit of 18-40, which is going to be a problem for some people. They also don't refund, so if you book and they cut this "too old" buillshit, then you'll lose the cash...That really sucks!

I shall be staying at the Bulldog. No ageist bullshit there. Only 100 yards from the Greenhouse too:D

That policy is crap on a stick. I could see something narrower, like 18-30, if they're really serious about keeping the crowd as young (and presumably liquid) as possible, but if you're allowing people up to age 40, why stop there?
I've shared hostel rooms with people over 40. In Budapest I even bunked with a couple, both of whom were nearly 60. They had the most fascinating travel stories, probably because they hadn't lived their lives sheltered by hotel concierges and tourist packages.
Perhaps if any 40+ dopers out there need fake IDs, the more Photoshop savvy among us could assist them.
What type of room did you book at FP Downtown, QN?
queerninja
08-29-2007, 07:49 PM
haha! I'm sure I could knock up a few IDs man :D
I can't see how age is a determining factor of anything. I mean, if there is loud active buzz in a place, it's gonna be at a hostel, and surely if people don't like that kinda thing, they would just go somewhere else. What the fuck is age? ggrrrrrrr.......
Dude, I'm in a 4 person room. Let me know if you want me to PM ya all the info.

I would imagine they're just trying to avoid people who don't like late-night comings and goings from booking and then making the staff's life a misery by complaining all the time: I'm sure they wouldn't actually refuse you if you booked, but maybe someone should drop them an email or phone call and let us know the result?

From the Flying Pig Hostels Amsterdam Terms and Conditions, House Rules on the official site (http://www.flyingpig.nl/bookings/terms2.shtml):
"To preserve and maintain our laid-back atmosphere we do not allow: Persons under 18 year of age or above 40, any bookings of stag nights, hen nights or sport tours, soccer fans for (inter)national matches and large groups of males (more then 10 persons) or pets."
Too bad I'm a large group of more than ten 40-something male pets planning a stag night for their underage kids after watching the Chelsea-Blackburn match in the Flying Pig Hostel Bar. ;-)
I think the Dopefiend is right though. How cold-hearted could Flying Pigs be? I can see them flat-out rejecting underage kids, but an adult willing to pay for a bed with no complaints?
If I can get Mrs. Bibbo to sign off on it, I'm on my way to the Flying Pig. Or perhaps -- if I can convince a few harder working friends to leave their jobs for 4 days -- we can spring enough for a houseboat. Of course, I'd have to decide this like, right now. I'll give myself til next week...

Woohoo! I just emailed my travel agent about a week ago and asked him to keep an eye out for 'earlybird fares' to EU.
Like you said BigBibbowski, it's very costly to get to EU from AU so I started saving up towards the ~$2500US  I'll be needing, only about 2 weeks after returning from the last 420!
I stayed at the Flying Pig Downtown last time and really enjoyed it (despite being the only Dopefiend listener to stay there, suprisingly!!) I must admit after my first day, I wanted to check-out and find a hotel but that's 'cos I'm fussy and had only stayed in 4 star and 5 star hotels before that! (Okay, maybe there was that 3.5 star hotel once, but the brochure said 4 star!! :D)
Having said that, I'll be staying at the Flying Pig Downtown again in 2008 and am happy to see other Dopefiend-ers will be there to join me! I just love that loungey area you can sit at downstairs at the front and roll joints all day - although beware, if you get too fucked up you'll be misled into thinking it's SAFE to take a hit from the bong they provide (big no no - the water is like SLUDGE!)
Can't wait guys! Start chipping away and saving now (LEFTY) and we will all meet again in Amsterdam in 2008!!

This sounds great-Old Bastards Crew represent! Maybe after I show the Flying Pig that I don't have a wheelchair or dentures, they'll let me stay.:) If they don't want my money I'll gladly give it to the Bulldog. I'm already annoying the management at work already for a few weeks off for this, so hopefully I can attend. I just hope someone in the group can speak a little Dutch so that they can help with the hospital staff after I rent a bicycle.

I'll be there, was planning on being in town for 4/20 anyway but since I found the dopecast and the forums there's no way I'mmissing it. Will probably just be a short weekend trip depending on whats going on at the time, but may try and stretch it to a 10 day tour of the Netherlands or maybe further afield so I can be back in Amsterdam for Queensday...
How busy do the hostels get for 4/20? Whats the latest I could leave it to book beds?
Hopefully see all you guys there!
Pothead
11-04-2007, 11:37 AM
easy-est and best thing to do is to book as early as you can to make sure you get somewhere! 420 will be busy i think as its one of the main times to go after with the cannabis cup being the busy-est of course, if you leave it too late you may have to go for somewhere away from the city centre as the centre gets the busy-est first

Actually Pothead, most Europeans have no idea at all what 4/20 is, and so it's not a particularly busy time at all in Amsterdam. Last year we had to explain what it was all about to nearly every coffeeshop we visited! It's an American thing!
Nonetheless, we're likely to have around double the amount of attendees if the 100th episode gathering was anything to go by, so it's agood idea to get everything booked early anyway, as the best hostels (like the Flying Pig) will probably be filling up.

Cheers for the advice on booking guys, I wasn't sure how busy 420 gets. I'll most likely stay at the Wiston hostel on Warmoestraat (www.winston.nl), not a massive fan of the pig as I'll have the mrs with me.
As for flights, I strongly recommend any Europeans heading to Dopestock (or just flying in general) to have a look at www.skyscanner.net - its a great site for finding the cheapest flights and I've found some absolute bargains using it. Normally pay £40-£50 rtn including taxes from the UK!
I'm sure many of you are Amsterdam veterans but if anyone has any questions about accomodation, coffeeshops etc I'd like to think I'll be able to help, I've been to Mokum many times over the past 6 years and have stayed in lots of different parts of the city so if I can help anyone with anything just let me know :)

Up till til now me and my gf would always talk about going to Amsterdam but we never really took it seriously, but after hearing everybody talk about it I am giving it some serious thought. I definitely have the money and can get the time off but the problem could be with my gf getting enough to pay for it. If anybody has any advice or tips on getting the cheapest way to get there from the states please pm me, in the meantime ill search the forums for old posts regarding it. It would be absolutely amazing to be able to make it there for dopestock. Wish me luck!:D

First thing to do is check the actual airlines site, KLM and NWA. Then theres loads of cheap flight websites in the US. Check out orbitz, travelocity, hotwire, priceline, sidestep, kayak and airgorilla.

Downtown is far more centrally located, close to Dam Square, the station and the RLD, I'm sure thats where most will be.
Uptown is further south closer to Vondelpark and Leidseplein, a bit quieter but an excellent location if you want to get away from the touristy centrum area.

everytime i go to dam i have to get to the airport 2 hours before takeoff and it absolutely kills me.
the excitement of going over there and having to wait 2 hours for the flight, 1 hour flying time and then the train into central station is a real test of my patience :D:D
i usually go straight to pri di amix for a big fatty before checking into the hotel.
one time on my way over there alone, the plane i was on was struck by lightning and it scared the life out of me.......by the time i got out of the station i was saturated with sweat and must have looked like a right weirdo:D
i remember the guy at pri di was looking at me as though i was gonna do something dodgy (i was sweaty and shaking, still 1 hour later)
that was funny in hindsight but NOT funny on the plane.

haven''t seen that film mate.
was crazy though......there was a very loud bang and a huge flash. (i looked out of the window and expected to see the wing GONE)
there was a synchronised aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh from all the passengers and even the flight staff looked completely shaken
the whole plane shook as though in heavy turbulence for a few seconds then that was it.
when we landed everyone cheered and ran for the exits.....one lady was sobbing on the way out and was saying something like "thank the lord we are safe" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
it WAS really quite frightening and when we got off the plane there was a big burn/scorch mark right above the general area where i was sitting.
quite an experience :D:D for me there was no better place to be heading too after this event.
i smoked a pure jack herer spliff and giggled to myself on what was the start of an amazing time in the dam

OK I'm bumping this up. It looks like around the 18th is when everyone will start rolling in. I will be starting a month long vacation from there, and will be heading east for the rest of my trip I think, when the time gets closer I'll know more.
For those that like to dream and surf the web, here's a few projects that I'll be needing help with. I'm not sure what all the Dopfiend has going on, but a group effort will make this a trip of a lifetime, especially for those that this is their first time to Europe or Amsterdam.
-Any music/comedy shows worth seeing during that time
-Any cool clubs worth going to at night? Including Jazz, live music and DJ's
-I heard there is a cannabis friendly boat trip through the canals, is this true? If so, how can we hook it up?
-Is there any sitdown type restaurants that are cannabis friendly? I think it would be cool to have a killer meal, and then be able to spark up after the meal and continue to socialize with the people we shared the meal with.
-What museums will be worth checking out?
That's all for now, if anyone has non-coffee shop recommendations feel free to share them, the coffee shops I'm sure are already picked, just looking for other stuff to make this an even more pleasurable time.

The only comedy I've seen in Amsterdam is Boom Chicago which is a group of American improv actors, very funny when baked and a great night out, you get a meal before the show. There's a really good online guide to whats on in Amsterdam here : http://www.underwateramsterdam.com/
Personally for good live music check out the Waterhole on Leidseplein, especially the jam sessions they have there, lots of jazz, funk, blues plus its smoker friendly.
some boat trips defintely allow smoking but they are generally the smaller firms and you should ask in advance. You can also charter a boat for a couple of hours with a captain, noramally they'll let you do whatever you want if you tip. You can also rent small boats electric boats and pedalos.
As for smoker friendly restaurants theres not many to be honest. Theres obviously Barneys for breakfast, also Coco's Outback on Thorbeckerplein. The best is probably the new Rookies restaurant which is opposite their coffeeshop. I'd also strongly recommend Paradox coffeeshop in the Jordaan which do an incredible veggie burger and a few other snacks.
My favourite non-smoking places to eat are Cafe De Klos (Best ribs in the world), Keuken (Traditional dutch food and an absolute bargain!), Pacifico (Really good Mexican food, far better than its location suggests).
MY favourite museums and tourist attractions are :
Van Gogh Museum - an absolute must.
Anne Frank House - another must
Artis (The Zoo!) - Such a great place to spend an afternoon, the animals are really well cared for and its far nicer than English zoos.
Hortus Botanicus - The botanical gardens are another great place to spend a couple of hours, loads of incredible tropical plants, cacti, butterflies etc.
If you want any links to any of the places I've mentioned or any other info let me know!

Great list jay_k - there's a few in there I'd never thought of...I guess I always seem to be drawn to stoner hang-outs and stoner eating places :p
On the subject of smoke-friendly boats, many many years ago there used to be a floating coffeeshop called T-Boot until it was shut down. However the guy who owns it kept it running 'quietly'...I'm not sure what this guy is doing now-a-days but if you can manage to track him down (he used to frequent MJ forums) then you might be able to hook up with him for a cruisey, smokey ride down Amsterdam's beautiful canals!
If not, how about a bunch of us chip in and charter a small boat for the arvo to do a canal ride where we can also enjoy the local bud? Any volunteers to start asking around?

If not, how about a bunch of us chip in and charter a small boat for the arvo to do a canal ride where we can also enjoy the local bud? Any volunteers to start asking around?

There are three to get you started. :)
I also just found a post on another forum I use from a guy who used the boat from the Rookies coffeeshop, this is a copy of the email from the operator :
Hi *******,
Thats possible we don't do it anymore buth for good custumers we make a acception. The boat is a open boat en it can hold 25 people maximal its 10mtrs long and 3 wide we have a cd player on board so you can bring cd's cdrom also.
the price is € 300,- for 2 hours true the canals from amsterdam you can bring your own drinks and food we have a fridge. 420 is no problem buth no hard stuf please. The boatride is at your own risk.
Your more then welcome to rock the rookies boat.haha

I'm down to go on a boat ride. One of my favorite thing to do in Europe is taking boat/canal trips down the various rivers. You get a different perspective on how the cities are structured.
Being able to light up while doing this trip would be such a great social experience.
Thanks for that list and the smoke friendly Jazz club sounds like something I'll be checking out.

Who is 100% defintiely going to Dopestock and would be interested in a smoker friendly boat trip, assuming it didn't clash with any other Dopestock related things?
I'm happy to help organising if needed, but I can't be 100% sure I'll be there for 4/20 yet. To be honest its gonna take something pretty major for me not to be there but I won't know for sure til Jan. We'll need someone who will be there for sure to put stuff in their name etc if we wanna go ahead an book anything. (Hope that paragraph makes sense).

Well I looked into a trip from here, and it runs about 2200-2500 for me and the 'ol lady.
I actually found that by leaving the 18th, arriving the 19th IN "A"...staying until Monday was the same price as leaving Sunday., and if I added a flight, and hotel together it came out that I could stay a day longer, and get a hotel for the price of original flight. Go figure. Still checking. This was on expediadotcom
I am looking into staying longer into the middle of the weeks. I believe you could do it for around the same price. fly in middle of week, and then we could travel around Europe on a couple day trips. More later. I want to try and get out there too. Peace lw :)
p.s. I noticed 2-3 of the more centrally located, cheaper hotels booked on those days. hmmm Wonder who booked those rooms. LOL peace again

Just found a potential boat tour that would suit our needs : http://www.amsterdamboatclub.com/rides.html
They are a not for profit organisation that take groups out on smoker-friendly tours, they have 2 boats that both seat around 12 and its only voluntary donations (around 10Euros per person). The boat ride lasts around 60-90 mins depending on weather etc.
What do you think?

Interested parties?
yo big i am definitly going 420 to a-dam and plan on staying on for queens day(4/30/08)and will have to talk further but might be interested in lodgeing sharingwith someone peace larz

Dude, I'm booked already! Not missing this!
I'm at the Flying Pig Downtown 18-22 April, but I just found out some annoying information:
They have an age limit of 18-40, which is going to be a problem for some people. They also don't refund, so if you book and they cut this "too old" buillshit, then you'll lose the cash...That really sucks!
fuck the age i am 40ish and smoke, work,&fuck circles around most half my age serenity now!

Nothing happened to them BB, I just came across this website and the fact that we wouldn't have a to pay anything until after the boat journey is very appealing instead of anyone having to lay down a large deposit.
I'll get onto it full steam in the next couple of weeks, they're probably dealing with a lot of xmas and nye bookings so may be better to leave the real planning until Jan.
I'm totally open to suggestions and if anyone else wants to send out a couple of emails to test the water that'd be awesome! :)

I won't be joining you, but A'dam is my favorite city and there are tons of great things to do other than enjoy those coffeeshops.
Rent a bicycle! It's a great way to get around, you'll see more of the city and will not be so wiped from walking all day.
Check out some of the markets. They have different outdoor markets almost every day. Especially if you are bringing your wife/girlfriend, these are a good deal and some pretty painless shopping.
For hotels, I've enjoyed staying around the Liedsplein.
Here's a very good site for hotels

What ever happened with these boat plans? (http://www.thegrowreport.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=795&highlight=dopestock&page=7) is it all still happening?
jay_k
12-13-2007, 03:21 PM
No reason why not, I haven't looked into anything yet, I've been really busy with uni work and am still not 100% certain I'll be at 420 because I haven't been given exam dates yet.
The first thing we need to establish is numbers, how much people would be willing to pay, how long the boat trip should last etc Once we have those details in place I/we can start looking into who offers what we're looking for and then figure out how we can book it.
The most difficult part is numbers, its very easy for people to say yes on the internet but then when it comes to paying a deposit and turning up it gets more complicated.
I'm more than happy to help in whatever way I can but the first thing we need to do is get the basic details set in stone :)
