Just had to say that the podcast explaining the two stories of genesis really had a huge impact on me. When I realized what the minister really meant about the church/serpent being the subtle deceiver, I couldn't help but laugh.
It is so genius and simple. Those who attempt to dictate to us what is right and wrong are the eternal serpent which we bruise our heel upon. The best way to calculate morals is by perceiving the reality around us, while giving a healthy respect to introspection as well.
It seems to me as though people often forget of this other intelligence that was in the garden that day. The serpent. Can you really fault Eve when there was a force working against her?
I think a good analogy is the rumor I've heard about an experimental town in england (perhaps other places). This town has no traffic laws whatsoever, it allows the citizens to drive their cars whatever speed they wish... but somehow it works out to produce less car crashes than stop signs and stop lights and speed limits. We don't need a serpent to tell us what to do. We need only to perceive the godly.
The collective unconscious seems to create a more compatible set of right and wrongs... so long as no one talks about it.
Any thoughts?
