The book I have has given me a list of items to make malt-yeast agar...but one of the ingredients is...well agar!
So I was wondering if anyone knows what agar itself is. I know this is something I can buy online, but was wondering if it has another use in the common world so that I can go and physically buy it.
The book I have does not say what exactly agar is, except for a scientific explaination explaining why it is neccesary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

agar is a gelatinous substance derived from seaweed.

This site has some great resources in regards to agar + petri dishes.

Some people on Yahoo answers suggested Vegan jello should work.

If you find out that Jello works, let us know!

Some where I watched a vid on making potato agar. I'll look around to find it. I've been thinking about using agar for a minute. You can isolate strains and characteristics more easily using it.

Yeah I would much rather be able to direct clone. I didn't have any luck with the spore print I tried to make last time.
Potato agar...I will check it out.

Thanks
