I just recently found this Norwegian site selling led lights for use in a professional green house. They are insanely expensive but it may be if they are effective that they may pay of to the professional grower. so is led lights usable? it starts to seem like thats the case.

This technology is only going to get cheaper and cheaper, I think production costs are dropping 5-10% annually.

I wish I had more faith in these LED's. I had a small all blue led panel and it was just "ok" for supplemental lighting. I think the tech has a little way to go before I would invest.

My guess is flowering with one would produce buds but the loose kind you get when flowering with florescent. Not the dense stacked kind.

I think I am more interested in more powerful floro's at this point.

i know there probably not the best for flowering but for mom's and maybe vegging

they come in blue, red or mixed colour ranges and in different sizes

Zandor is not quick to jump on the LED bandwagon and I agree. Though the LED vendors can force LED lights to emit a specific wavelength (nm) of light and we have a pretty good idea which wavelengths our favorite plant uses, there are numerous so total light spectrum output is decreased. Since the LED lights are lit by electrons moving within a semiconductor. So a control panel needs to be designed to dynamically change the nm output so the plant can have the full spectrum it requires. The current LED grow lights stick to static nm wavelengths per LED. The nm is determined by the transistor in front of the LED.
Proof is in the KBS growers. Look at the fact that they used both HPS and MH in their grows which gives the plant the best spectrum coverage possible with current technology. I am not saying the tecnhology sucks. I want so bad what everyone wants.

Cost effective maintenance (no bulb replacement)

At the end of the day, the technology will eventually be able to answer most of our prayers when it comes to lighting some time in the future, but not just yet.

I must say that for 99.999% of people, it's a waste of time. I'm not trying to be a pessimist, I'm just... Well, here, let's simply put it in perspective.

Do you take a HPS lamp and plug it directly into the wall? No, you don't, you plug it into a piece of fancy electronic equipment called a Ballast. Well, similarly with LEDs, connecting them directly to a power source without any driver circuitry will not get you the kind of plant growth you're looking for.

So the key problem is the ballast. Ballasts for LED lighting of plants don't actually exist, so you have to build one. This is why for 99.999% of people, it's a waste of time. You need to be an armchair electrical engineer in order to throw together something that will give you results.

If you want to build your own ballast (pulsed DC, PWM), here are my suggestions:
- variable frequency from 2kHz to 20kHz (honestly, a set 20kHz would be fine)
- variable pulse width from 1% to 10% (this is required, as hopefully you'll have the ballast long enough that you'll be able to use it with different types of LEDs, which may have different tolerances to high current pulsing. Being able to back down the pulse width will keep you from frying your LEDs)
- selectable constant current in multiples of 20 mA, from 20mA to 500mA.
- multiple "channels" which can have their pulse width and frequency adjusted independently.
- A very accessible on/off switch, just in case.
The best way that I've encountered to do this type of thing is by basing it around a PIC microcontroller. The easiest of course is the PICAXE ( www.picaxe.co.uk ) which can be programmed in BASIC and doesn't require special programming hardware to use. You use the microcontroller to take care of frequency and pulse width, you use JFET transistors configured as current regulators (see here) in order to handle current regulation.

So if you're the EE type, by all means. Get some 730nm, 660nm and 430nm LEDs and get crackin' on that ballast. (note: 470nm and 640nm could be added as well)


so i found this somewhere and it makes alot of sence as to why the leds arent that good yet

if you dont understand what is writen , get a maxitronix 500 in one electronics lab heheheh and youll know everything you want to know

in fact i think EVERY diyer should purchase the maxitronix 500 in 1 electronics lab hehehehe

I still call bullshit on the LEDs. didn't get to read everyones posts, but, maybe later. Don't waste your money.
