Ok boys and girls, this is some fucking dark ambient stuff, if you're familiar with any of the Cold Meat Industry label stuff, I think that they used to be ON that label (may still be).
This is NOT stuff to take a trip (or any other drug) to, in my opinion. BUT, if you're willing to experiment, let me know!!!

THIS, Grow Report family, is a very spooky release. It is a cross between Black/Death Metal and Ambient, similar to the brilliant MZ.412 band's earlier material.
I do not reccomend taking any hallucinogenic whilst listening to this deadly, but beautiful recording.

A dark ritual project, playing eerie and haunting industrial ambient music with a satanic background, obsessive percussions and frightening demonic voices. The original line-up consisted of Tomas Pettersson and Mikael Stravöstrand. They worked together from 1990 to 1993, then the former went on to form Ordo Equilibrio, while the latter continued under the name Archon Satani, as well as with his other project Inanna.

Penitent is the project of one Karsten Hamre, who has been making music for some 13 years. Penitent’s first album initially appeared on Cold Meat Industry, making the comparison to Raison d’etre somewhat lazy. But ‘lazy’ does not translate as “inaccurate” and “Among the Sleepless” is imbued with the air of dark ambient that has come to be associated with artists on Cold Meat Industry (despite having departed the label more than a decade ago).
But Penitent did not initially strike me as a dark ambient act, but appeared to be aligned with martial industrial, a reasonable impression based on the classical strains and militaristic drumming of “Transfiguration” (which followed after an intro). But this proves to be a misleading move as they pack away the martial tendencies in favour of an unambiguous dark ambient approach mentioned above. With the benefit of hindsight, “Transfiguration” did possess an etherealness better suited to ambient than Wagnerian bombast, but its still quite a different beast from the remainder of the album, and no more belongs here than the Pope buying condoms at the 7-11. But its good and its placement at the beginning of the album does come at the beginning, so it does not disrupt the flow of the album and thus can be forgiven. Moving on to the remaining seven songs, they all follow a similar motif of industrial pounding with a murky and depressive atmosphere. The industrial percussion tends to be simple but engaging and the Raison d’etre comparisons seem especially valid in their evocation of poorly lit, dingy warehouses in the industrial sector of town. But most of the songs tend to evoke feelings of passing through murky yet majestic cathedrals rather than the through modern warehouses. To conclude, this will appeal to fans of both dark ambient and the quintessential “Cold Meat Industry sound”.

Recorded 60 meters below the centre of Stockholm, in a long forgotten chamber among the city's tunnels, this collection of instrumental tracks was inspired by the so called evil Simon Magus who fought Simon Petrus. The music conjures up images of dark spacious temple halls, demons, mystical rites and churches. Instruments used in this collection include piano, farfisa organ, dark ritualistic drums, keyboards, harps and various string instruments

"Puissance is an ambitious project composed by two excellent musicians from Sweden, Henry Moller and Frederik Soderlund. Not a lot of people probably know this band and that's not so surprising when you know that they use to compose a kind of Dark / Industrial /Ambient music. At 10 000… kilometres of the trendy releases that we can find nowadays, their albums are a bit weird for a basic metalhead but all the people who are a bit open minded will probably like them, especially their new one "Grace Of God" which is probably their most accessible release.
With Puissance, all is a mater of ambiance before anything else. Of course, we have real songs, real melodies etc, it's music don't worry but don't even expect to find catchy choruses or something similar, it's just not the point of the music of the band. Like a lot of Dark and Ambient bands, Puissance produces a dark music which flirt with Gothic, Doom or even "religious" music. This incredible mix of different music with a lot of orchestrations is really beautiful and "Grace Of God" is this kind of albums that you'll have to listen to in peace at home just to pass a great emotive and peaceful moment.
The compositions are magisterial and it's a real pleasure to listen to the album. A bit like some classical music a la Wagner the songs of "Grace Of God" will give you a lot of emotion. Plus, you have to know that the band chose to write something a bit more accessible and easy with this album. The songs are complex there is a lot of work no doubt but on the other hand it's not so elitist and "intellectual", definitely it's easier of access now. But the most impressive thing of the album is definitely the general ambiances that we can find on each songs. Really, trust me, when you'll listen to the CD, you'll have some shivers and a lot of strange feelings, from happiness to fear or sorrow.
"Grace Of God" is a really beautiful peace of music, and no doubt that in the style, it will probably become a classic. This is not something for everybody on a side but if you're a bit open minded and like to listen to this kind of music, you'll love this album. With a great production, a beautiful digipack and of course a bunch of great songs, "Grace Of God" will be one of the best album of the year in this category. Don't miss it if you're a fan of the band or if you use to listen to this kind of music."

Since 2004 Belgian act Weihan has been making an interesting mix of Neo-classical Industrial music. With this third release, the band has seemed to have taken the maximum out of their capabilities and thus made a remarkable and outstanding release, probably worthwhile to have in any collection. Released on Old Europa Café as a luxurious digipack with a nice booklet supplied with it, this release comes as a limited edition of 540 pieces.
When looking into the booklet one comes across the lyrics but more important; various quotes of famous philosophers and spokesman like Nietzsche, Jung and Curtis. Weihan takes the listener on a trip to the world of the old Germanic religion. Which is great and not seen that much, is that Weihan has taken the effort to add text and information with every track. This will help the amateur on this religion a lot, as it is not your regular information. The quotes fit with each song and thus this release can be seen as a musical expedition into the beliefs of Weihan. It is a guide to Germanic traditions and religion.
The music on “Symphonies of Divination” is very Classical based. Although all made electronically, the sound is very pure and rich. The beautiful classical passages make the listener drift away to wherever he or she would like to be. With a touch of martial the beautiful compositions may have a sharper dark edge but still continue to be powerful. The electronically made classical instruments mainly are drums, choirs, strings and (bass)chello’s. I wonder how this would sound with an actual orchestra, it would definitely enrich the sound and maybe make a great new classical composition. If only orchestras would hire themselves for lesser money…
The classical parts are surrounded by bombastic drums and powerful pounds of hits. These parts are divided through more beautiful and pure parts by piano or stand-alone string instruments. The music tends to sound medieval at times, which makes the dimensions greater and fits right with the created atmosphere. The vocals sung by Miguel are also worthwhile to mention. Not only the vocalization is magical, perfectly pronounced and diverse, the lyrics are outstanding. Sung in different languages, but mainly in English, the texts mainly are about the Germanic gods but also hold certain facts about life and morals. Especially the Dutch parts are really interesting and reveal the specialty about this release. Tracks that certainly stand out are “Murder of the Soul” with its pounding dark drumline and the ominous vocals, “Ashes” as a rightful intro to the music which is yet to follow and “The Wanderer” with the diverse choice of lyrics. Certainly “Ashes” is a great example of what Weihan is capable to do without the use of an actual orchestra.
With excellent production, great lyrical choices and the beautiful Neo-Classical music, “Symphonies of Divination” is an actual fresh wind into the post-industrial music scene. The artwork of the digipack is very fitting and makes the package very worthwhile to buy. Listening to “Symphonies of Divination” may not fit on any moment throughout the day, but at certain moments in life it would make the best soundtrack to have. Outstanding release which is hopefully a preview for what is yet to come from Weihan.

http://www.plong.com/MusicCatalog/S/Shpongle%20-%20Are%20You%20Shpongled/Shpongle%20-%20Are%20You%20Shpongled.jpg
Shpongle is a criminally underrated electronic psychedelic band which successfully mixes the sound of pulsing psychedelic trance, with first rate ambient atmospherics. Like Steve Hillage in System 7, Shpongle is the modern home for a former 60's underground psych musician. Raja Ram, formerly the flautist and vocalist for Quintessence, provides the personality and basic aesthetic for Shpongle, along with some flute and strange chanted vocals. Supporting him the more nitty gritty side of drum and sequencing programming, and synths is Simon Posford. The two apparently hooked up musically after witnessing a solar eclipse in India while tripping the life fantastic. That scenario pretty much sums up the sound of the album too.
Are You Shpongled? presents a very unique and interesting form of psychedelia. The tools here are made up of your basic late 90's electronic music kit, although with some nice organic sounds sprinkled in, but the aim has more to do with the 60's. Posford and Raja Ram seem to be attempting some sort of spiritual nirvana through their music, which I doubt the Chemical Brothers tend to try (even if they have managed several awesome electronic psych tracks).
The first half of this disc presents some relatively short songs (only 7-9 minutes!) that are a fine introduction to the world of Shpongle. There are lots of world percussion sounds, cool samples, and plenty of Raja's flute. I tend to view this as the prelude for the second half, however.
Starting with "Behind Closed Eyes," the album takes on a more epic bent. The 12 minutes track is like a voyage through a dance club slowly but shifting into a ayahuasca induced Peruvian forest. It's very visual music, especially if you follow the instructions of the title.
Even better, and the peak of the album is "Divine Moments of Truth." Pick out the initials and you'll find that this is a tribute to this strong psychedelic substance. Fortunately, the music does a perfectly fine job on it's own evoking the kaleidoscopic, multi-dimensional world beyond this one. The shifting beats, and vocoded and organic chants do an amazing job of pushing the listener through an auditory trip. Following this is the far more chilled out "...And the Day Turned to Night," which owes more than a bit to late 70's and early 80's Tangerine Dream synth epics, while still including Shpongle's own trance-like bent.
Shpongle's debut does a great job melding modern electronic beats and effect to music that aims for a 60's aesthetic. There's really nothing else that sounds quite like this band.
(Shpongle were heard on Dopecast episode 30 during a live DMT trip assisted by Max Freakout!)

Shpongle continued to inhabit their distinctive little musical niche on this 2001 album. Fortunately, they did not attempt to recreate the blueprint of their debut as many electronic acts tend to do. I don't think this is quite as good as the debut, but it is still quite impressive and manages a different feel.
While the first album evoked wild psychedelic trips through multi-dimensional space, this one sounds a little more like the hip tribal ceremony down by the beach. The tracks are somewhat shorter, focusing on a distinct vibe rather than the shifting canvases of the first album. Additionally, there is far more organic sounds here. Simon Posford breaks out his Spanish flavored guitar straight away on "Dorset Perception," and it turns out that his fine playing fits perfectly in Shpongle's music.
Shpongle does a great job matching atmosphere to song titles. "A New Way To Say "Hooray"" takes on a humorous bent as we listen to the almost plodding march-like rhythm. Raja Ram gets plenty of space for his strange exhorations and spacey flute too. Meanwhile, "My Head Feels Like A Frisbee" is set to a rhythm that seems to be sonically spinning, before it collides with a little space age mambo. The most 'epic' track here would be "Around the World in a Tea Daze." It shows some signs of Berlin school pulsing, but ends up throwing a wall of worldbeat sounds and vocals. Honestly, it probably comes close to the line of being a bit cheesy, which was never an issue on the first album. If you're ok with a couple symphonic synths and an occasional club beat, you'll be fine. Besides the song eventually glides into Raja Ram nice introspective "Flute Fruit," which closes the album.
I would definitely suggest picking up Shpongle's debut first, but if you find that the atmosphere is your thing, then Tales Of The Inexpressible will add some fuel to your musical fire.

This is a damn fine album. Here Shpongle refines some of the atmospherics and world beat elements of Tales Of The Inexpressible and uses them to create a voyage more like their first album. The concept here is a series of dreams which equates to what I like to think of as some awesome audio paintings. Although there are 20 listed on the back cover, it's better to think of these as several long tracks, especially as there is no pause between many of the tracks.
Posfords guitars return here as do many of the female vocals and other worldbeat elements. But where the last album used these in a jarring manner that sometimes threatened to make these psychedelic explorers sound more like Deep Forest, everything here is fully integrated into the trance-inducing rhythmic structure. Of course Raja Ram is present to contribute some odd utterances and make sure things are properly twisted.
As far as I can tell, the first dream sequence is like a surreal trip to Rio, maybe a little fear and loathing during carnival. The second sequence makes me think of a flying dream, an out of body experience perhaps above the London skies. For the next sequence we have an encounter with ancient Mayan shamanic culture. The fourth sequence places images of a extremely technological future in my head; sort of a happier Blade Runner landscape. For the finale we get a sequel to "Divine Moments Of Truth," which sounds like another DMT trip to me, including a Ned Flanders sample from the psychedelic chili pepper episode of "The Simpsons."
Of course the beauty here is that everyone will probably come up with completely different images and interpretation. This is a concept as no concept, or perhaps an attempt to tap into the collective unconscious.
Shpongle's third album is a nice Roarshach Test. It's not enough to listen to this album passively. To really appreciate it properly you must imprint a bit of yourself into the music and listen actively and using your own imagination.

This isn't so much music as an experience. I wouldn't recommend listening to this album while driving or maybe even while standing. It's really a mind-warping experience of its own and may very well throw off your balance, especially on headphones. I'm actually making lots of typos while listening and typing.
Coil is well known as leading proponents of the industrial drone, and that's pretty much all you'll find here. The entire album consists of analog synthesizer drones pulsing at various oscillating rates. At its heart, Time Machines is a series of somewhat darkly hued sound painting. Fortunately, Coil are quite skilled at this sort of thing and the entire recording seems very smooth and consistent even as tones sometimes whirl off onto the stratosphere. Although this is best used as background music that has the strange side effect of turning your brain into jelly. If you're familiar with the construction of analog synths, you may want to try and pay attention as the band knob twirling is impressively controlled and effective.
There's not much point going over the tracks themselves, but it's well worth noting that they're all titled after synthetic chemical compounds. I don't know my chemistry, but I would assume of the mind bending variety. They're not named lightly as these tracks will indeed perform some sonic surgery on your brain. Time Machines comes across as a slightly dangerous album.
This is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea. If I haven't scared you off already, I think you'll find that this disc contains something a little different than what is generally found on a CD or a piece of vinyl (or an mp3 I guess). Let Coil reprogram your mind if you dare.

This is a disc that it's almost impossible to pay attention to, but that is among its prime advantages as a swirling whirlpool of ambient sound. The Aeolian String Ensemble is a group that portents to create all of their sound through the use and electronic modification of the ancient Aeolian harp. I suppose that through said electronic modification you can get anything you want, but I swear there are a few underpinning synths here and there, or perhaps we're hearing masterfully controlled wooden echoes from the wooden box of the instrument. Regardless, the star of the show is the harp and this album takes it to some strange and very meditative places.
There are only two tracks making up this release, and the title of the disc includes both of them. "Lassithi" runs at a mind-boggling 58 minutes, and I guess it would be the kind of thing you'd actually want to hear as you're chilling out at the spa (although I must admit that I have little experience with spas beyond the Japanese hot spring variety). The sound is slowly shifting, and is extremely fluid, with the listener just barely discerning the slow changes. I think that last statement is going to help define if you're going to be interested in this one or not. Next up is the brief (at 14 minutes!) "Elysium," which runs on the same basic modus operandi, but spews forth a much darker and clausterphobic sound. If the first track is intended for relaxation, "Elysium" is more for intense contemplation. I suppose that the mood shift is quite welcome after 58 minutes.
There are no melodies and little to grasp onto with the Aeolian String Quartet. What they do present is an ocean of tones that will influence the deeper parts of your brain. This is hard-core ambient music, if you will. I find this disc to be a perfect background setting and I hope that you may also find this useful in that regard.

Here's one that I've been anesthetizing my brain with for the past couple weeks. The All-Music Guide calls this one jazz, although the drums and distorted guitar combo definitely suggest more of a rock air. Really, with the modus operandi resting on a drone this is more of a future-injected raga. It kind of feels like the final five Cylon music out of Battlestar Galactica, but stretched out over 40 minutes. I mean that as a positive thing.
We've got tracks for three of the elements here; I guess these fellows aren't to hip on water. "Earth" gets this to a roaring star over its ten minute length. This must really send my brain into a trance as I've never had the impression that ten minutes have even passed when this one ends. The drone acts as the bedrock of the track while the drums spill all over the place in a style similar to Rashied Ali's pummeling on John Coltrane's very late period recordings (like the amazing Interstellar Space). I suppose that's where the jazz comes in. On top of that are some free form modal guitar runs that are pretty much the top form for that sort of thing. "Wind" brings things down a notch, although the basic instrumentation is the same. Our wild drummer does manage to reign himself in for an actual beat while the guitar attempts to cross the sitar barrier. Then everything comes together for the twenty minute "Fire," which passes us through raging torrents and graceful ebbs of roaring sitar-guitar and beats that seem to crest over rolling hills and epic mountains. This music will make you travel.
On The Radiant Mirror, you'll have the opportunity to hear rock/jazz/raga improvisation at its finest. I hesitate to refer to this as fusion as it doesn't really match up with that particular genre, but you will get an amazing blending of sounds different from anything you've experienced before. This is a true psychedelic experience.

We Must Survive is a sunshine psych gem that I had no prior knowledge about. The disc seems to date a little past the expiry date of the genre, but the sounds are definitely the real deal and recall the better moments of Curt Boettcher's and/or Gary Usher's love fest freak outs. There's a slight nod to prog here with some of the meatier instrumental parts, and I can't help but note the strong environmental awareness aspect that crops up here the very same year as the first Earth Day (I think). In fact, there seems to be a bit of a concept concerning that topic which ties the whole disc together.
As any good album should do, the opening tracks are winners. "Earth People's Park" takes a little of Brian Wilson's pocket symphony idea to heart with it's multiple sections, as does the somewhat harder rocking "Ride the Universe." Forsaking straight up lead vocals, most of the songs rely on a weave of harmonies that compare favorably with just about anyone else. The first bump in the road is probably with "This Island Earth," where the band unfortunately takes on the opportunity to sing the title in a ludicrously rising chorus. It might just be that images of the wonderfully cheesy movie of the same name are filtering through my head. Things get back on track with the ever-so-slightly morose "Doomsday Afternoon" (I'd expect something a little more hardcore with that title). Highlights later on the disc include the entertaining hippie nightmare, "Mother Earth Is a Beautiful Lover," which spins through both waltz time and a chilled version of a garage rock rave-up. A few of the references to Tin Pan Alley among the tracks don't really do it for me, but it comes across better to me than Harper's Bizarre doing similar affectations.
Finding really listenable sunshine pop can be a sometimes harrowing affair as you wade through endless oceans of saccharine sugar wads. Earth Island manages that tinge of melancholy that really takes the music to a higher level. It's not the absolute best in the genre, but I'd wager that it has more to offer than your average Spanky and Our Gang or Orpheus recording.

Somewhere past the precipice of sound, we find these avant-garde Italians making a curious racket. The ensemble began in 1954, obviously long before the psychedelic era, and their approach was along the more atonal side of contemporary classical composition than anything resembling popular music. Enrico Morricone was the most notable member of the group, although I have no evidence if he is part of this particular recording or not. Regardless, the mostly improvisational results here are definitely mind bending, and are sure to create a curious atmosphere in your music space.
Nothing here really resembles 'music' in the traditional sense of the word. We're looking more at alien soundtrack-scapes. There are plenty of seemingly random percussive and piano strokes scattered about the tracks, along with the occasional wailing horn. A few tracks like "Perfect Union," "String Quartet," and "Sunrise" scare me off with the screechier sound of string instruments, but I'm down with the more percussive odysseys of "Rkba -1675 Take One" and "Side One-Band Four." Honestly, even the more adventurous of you will probably find a few hits and a few misses on this one; it just depends on your personal tastes or aversions regarding abstract yet sparse orchestral sounds.
The big draw for me here is that this album is an interesting aural document of a specific artistic time and place. A few of you might be a little more up for the avant-garde orchestration, but I doubt that you're going to break this one out for your next dinner party. If you're looking for interesting nightmares, this could be a good bedtime album too. 'Private sea of dreams' could be 60's Italian code for nightmares for all I know.

How could we go wrong with a tripped out, turned on, hip priest?
Certainly not on this album.
I mean we're not really looking at a lost classic, but if you've got an itch for some psychedelic exploitation with a practically incomprehensible religious twist, then this is the right place to turn. I know nothing about the good father beside the evidence in front of me.
Musically, this is pure psychsploitation. There is an anonymous backing band hitting the requisite fuzzed out guitar patches along with tripped out organs (not church organs) and some groovy backbeats. They do get some chances to shine as on the rollicking, almost-flying apart "Chalice."
But the main act here is the spoken word voice overs of Father Berkery.
I think that the idea here was to have a series of short sermons, but in order to stay hip and 'with it,' the religious rhetoric is laced with third-rate Jim Morrison-isms. That's why we end up with lines like "Bless me father, for I have sinned/Stop pushing; I am the next to get in" on "Confession."
Also keep in mind that this is just after he's referred to the snakes slithering around the church pews.
No, Fr. Berkery never shows any signs of actual musical ability; he's just here for the chicks as with William Shatner Transformed Man (at least I hope that's why Shatner was in the studio; there's no other rational excuse for that one).
I guess he manages a few moments of white-priest filtered rapping on the almost funky "Seminary." Later, just the concept of "Celibacy" depresses me just a bit; but the good Father does have a nice psychedelic explanation of it.
"Preaching" comes acroos like the rightfully long-lost Byrds collaboration; actually make that with second-rate Byrds soundalikes.
This isn't really something that you're going to cruise around town groovin' to. But if a psychedelic album with a priest on the cover intrigues you, I don't think that this will disappoint. It's certainly something that would be fun for your next party playlist.

This disc seems to be a bit ahead of its time. We've got the requisite psychedelic sounds, but also some strange touches of prog rock and disco before the full emergence of those forms. If that's not enough, we get a Peter Pan concept album.
Strangely, the band doesn't take the 'happydaystoytown' approach so much, but works out some stranger noises to guide the story along. The Who's rock operas aren't a bad reference point, although the Merchants of Dream do carve out their own niche.
Even if we throw out the whole concept, there is some prime psychedelic pop hiding out in the grooves of this disc. After an enjoyable overture (take notes as side B will also start with an overture), we hear the disco-pulsing and orchestrated "Strange Night Voyage of Peter Pan."
"Wendy" follows well as a back-pulsing, mid-tempo freak-out. After a few story advancing tracks is the full-speed forward, psych rocker "Lovelife's Purple Circus." Hiding out on the second side is "Alicey," which comes across as your personal sonic morphine drip. We also will find "(We Are) Dream Vendors," which closes the album as the best track with a catchy chorus and a groovy beat.
I've got to admit that I rarely mentally apply myself to album concepts, and for better or for worse Strange Night Voyage is no exception. Fortunately, we get enough little nuggets of great psychedelic pop that the story doesn't really matter a whole lot. I don't know, show me the Broadway revival of this and maybe I'll get that aspect more; except that I'm not really a Broadway fan in the first place.

Attention! This band is a glowing jewel, it cast a spell over you and there's no escape!
ELANE's music is from another world, Dark Folk in a "Lord of the rings feeling" with a stunning vocal princess Joran. This young and high-motivated band creates their songs in an unbelievable greatest of ease which we've missed for such a long time in the music business. And Elane sounds new, but all the same familiar, it's a music you will never forget.
Elane are Joran, Katrin, Nico and Markus, 4 young musicians, high-talented, like sparkling diamonds in a swampy moor land. With filigree and ease the band lead us into the realm of their fanasy-land in a bewitched way. On 05th of November their album "The Fire of Glenvore" appears; a musical delicacy, a treat, only comparably with a tuscanian 4 courses menu, or the first warm sunbeam on a cold spring morning. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/77/Dead_Can_Dance_album.jpg
For those of you who do not know of Dead Can Dance - SHAME ON YOU!!!
Backgrounds and the like behind them, Perry and Gerrard created a striking, dour landmark in early-'80s atmospherics on their first, self-titled effort.
Bearing much more resemblance to the similarly gripping, dark early work of bands like Cocteau Twins and The Cure than to the later fusions of music that would come to characterize the duo's sound, Dead Can Dance is as goth as it gets in many places.
Perry and Gerrard's wonderful vocal work — his rich, warm tones and her unearthly, multi-octave exaltations — are already fairly well established, but serve different purposes here.
Thick, shimmering guitar and rumbling bass/drum/drum machine patterns practically scream their sonic connections to the likes of Robin Guthrie and Robert Smith, but they still sound pretty darn good for all that.
When they stretch that sound to try for a more distinct, unique result, the results are astonishing. Gerrard is the major beneficiary here — "Frontier" explicitly experiments with tribal percussion, resulting in an excellent combination of her singing and the rushed music.
Then there's the astonishing "Ocean," where guitar and chiming bells and other rhythmic sounds provide the bed for one of her trademark — and quite, quite lovely — vocal excursions into the realm of glossolalia.
Perry in contrast tends to be matched with the more straightforward numbers of digital processing and thick, moody guitar surge.
The album ends on a fantastic high note — "Musica Eternal," featuring a slowly increasing-in-volume combination of hammered dulcimer, low bass tones, and Gerrard's soaring vocals. As an indicator of where the band was going, it's perfect!

Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is the third album recorded by the Dead Can Dance duo, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, in 1987.
The cover's photograph was taken in Paris, at the Père-Lachaise cemetery. It features the grave of the politician Raspail.
Lisa Gerrard's vocals feature prominently in the second half of the album, and her singing style often has wailing Arabic overtones, especially on the track titled Cantara. It is in contrast to the dreamlike first half, but builds powerfully as the album progresses.

Spiritchaser (1996) was the last studio album of Dead Can Dance before Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard went their separate ways. It expands on their exploration of world music and like Into the Labyrinth, Spiritchaser was recorded at Quivvy Church, Perry's personal studio in Ireland.
The track "Indus" contains a melody that is very similar to the melody of "Within You Without You," a Beatles song that George Harrison composed with Indian musicians. Although not deliberate, Perry and Gerrard were asked to contact Harrison for his permission to use it; he granted it, but the record company insisted that they give him partial songwriting credit for it.

Ashes and Snow is an exhibition of Gregory Colbert's large scale photography and video, which (according to one reviewer) "evoke[s] a timeless communion between humankind and the animal kingdom never to be captured outside the realm of metaphor".
Those visiting this nomadic exhibit enter a cavernous sanctuary, through the middle of which runs a narrow boardwalk atop crushed white stones.
Lining the walkway at eye level are enormous sepia toned photos depicting wild animals and people together in what can only be described as a state of grace.
This lengthy gallery empties into a space beneath a big screen upon which expanded video footage of some of the photo subjects is projected.
Heard throughout this dramatic space is music made in the spirit of the displayed visual art.
A soundtrack album of ambient music from the exhibit and video soundtrack has been released and presents compositions by David Darling, Michael Brook, Djivan Gasparian, Lisa Gerrard and Peter Cassidy among others.
While Ashes and Snow (53'40") is unable to fully replicate the magical atmosphere of the exhibition, this compilation does bring into the listening area an element of the greater work's spirituality, and listening to the music privately away from the unique presentation space remains quite moving.
A number of these works are elegant manipulations of harmony and texture by way of overtone singing, string ensembles and the occasional synthesizer and seem reassuring and contemplative.
A few pieces with overt percussive elements provide the tension of directed energy and recall a more tribal spirit. Elsewhere, a track of soulful vocals with slow piano sits aside a composition for the breathy sound of the duduk as this soundtrack gently asks the listener of what meaning may lie in the beautiful melodies.
The Ashes and Snow CD presents 13 enigmatic tracks of stunning music based on non-western styles and is a must-have for those interested in adventurous spiritual music; but as a soundtrack to the installation, these works reverentially augment Colbert's dire ecological premise, "in the next 25 years, the human race will have to decide whether or not to preserve the bestiary of Nature's living masterpieces. 'Ashes and Snow' is not meant to tell people to do some things or not to do other things. It's meant to inspire. I hope it's not a requiem."

Farscape is a 2008 double album of electronic music by Klaus Schulze with guest singer Lisa Gerrard. It was first released in Europe on 4 July 2008 as a digipack double CD containing seven tracks called "Liquid Coincidence" (numbered 1 to 7).
Schulze explained the impetus for this album: "I have wanted to work with Lisa Gerrard since the days of Dead Can Dance, but I never had an opportunity for such a collaboration. It's also not so easy to reach her on the phone." Reciprocally, Gerrard said: "I know Klaus Schulze since Tangerine Dream. He is amazing, I mean, his work is sympathetic to a soul journey and has been for such a period of time."
Schulze prepared 300 minutes of music and scheduled 6 days with Gerrard for her to come to Hambühren: as Gerrard explained, "The important thing for me when I work with someone is that I go and listen to his music. All I did was go and improvise."
The whole recording was actually done in two afternoons (on day 2 and 3) and half of the material was selected for the album. Schulze concluded, "Many people think good music has something to do with sweat and hard work, and it needs to last for months. However, my opinion is that if this is the case, the music is bad. Because if you are on the ball then you're just playing your best stuff."

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tFTMaqlQ5VI/RlExSIIYO5I/AAAAAAAAAMY/-WZeJ0TZy-k/s1600/Irrlicht300.jpg
After stints with Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, drummer-turned-keyboardist Klaus Schulze created with his debut as a soloist a work that for many just possibly might out-Zeit Zeit. "Irrlicht" (literally meaning "erring light") is the German equivalent to the British 'Will o' the Wisp'; malevolent lights said to be fairy tale creatures luring people off of well-known paths and into a marshy doom.
This is the musical equivalent of taking out a huge, cosmic knife and slicing off a gigantic slab of space. Just how inert is this one? The first 10 minutes of the opening track represent a strict meditation on D. Not the chord of D, mind you. The note.
Piercing through the slow pulsations of D-drone, like wisps of clouds rapidly slicing through a full moon fixed in location on some October night, are strands of strings and other metallic sounds. The orchestra strings, echoing somewhere off in the distance, represent the most incredible blurring of real orchestra and imitative mellotron I have ever heard. If it weren't for some contextual clues dropped that this is an orchestra, you really wouldn't be able to tell if it were one or the other. Around the ten-minute mark, Schulze initiates a series of gothic, minor chords on the organ (predominantly Gmin, Fmin, and Cmin, and variations on these), set against a ghastly wind that begins to simulate crying voices as the music progresses. Towards the close of the piece, the chords begin to throb and swell from channel to channel, generating rhythm pulses that take on an eerie sequencer quality, in an age long before sequencers were established.
With "Satz Gewitter," the void opens, and all becomes sucked into a blob of echo, electronic wave-shifts, and tranquil, static organ lines that continue to reverberate the minor chords in the previous movement. The final movement is a precursor to the amorphous purgatories explored by Robert Fripp in his soundscape works (e.g., A Blessing of Tears, Gates of Paradise).
This is pretty much the archetype of a Klaus Schulze album: experimental, colossal in its ambient geography, and quite beautiful if one's ears are in the right place. If you hate his work, you are likely to substitute these descriptors with words like monotonous and pointless. In any event, rest assured that in purchasing Irrlicht you can distill the essence of what Klaus Schulze in his prime period was bringing to the table.

The third album in Klaus Schulze discography, titled Blackdance,is,in my opinion and judgement, similar to the album made (in the same year) by Tangerine Dream,Phaedra, the transition between the experimental year, represented in Klaus Schulze's discography by his previous two albums,Irrlicht and Cyborg, and his new (or I would say his main, most succesful and most used in albums) style. A transition album between the two styles and periods and not an album clearly framed in the new style/period that we are refering to because, again similar to Phaedra, both types, the evolution and the precedent, are mixed and combined, resulting in the most simple way to say,the album Blackdance.
The mix and combinations are represented and appear in two shapes:separated,as main themes and combined, with the new one appearing more proeminent (although not necessarily, that happens only in short few minutes section).
What is new in the album Blackdance and is innovating compared to Cyborg, making it the first album of Klaus Schulze new style (while what has remained unchanged compared to Cyborg makes him the last of Klaus Schulze previous experimental style) is not so hard to notice,it is the introducing of rhythms,of strict and synchronic sequence, used as beat in two of the tracks,Ways Of Changes and Voices Of Syn.Unlike the rhythm and sequence in Cyborg on the Conphara and Neuronengesang, which can still be considered beat and rhythm, the new one used in Blakcdance is related to percussion and not mechanized shynts of accelarating pulses (Irrlicht - Satz:Ebene)
The armonical style, called wrongly by me precedent, when in fact in fact it continues to sustain the melodical structure of every "next" album and every "next" phase of Klaus Schulze,is interpreted separately only in the middle piece,Some Velvet Phasing, used in a way that reminder of Synphara and Satz:Exil Sils Maria (a little less related to the last one although),pieces composed in a similar way.
If there are two things that I think of when I hear about Blackdance by Klaus Schulze,it is two special caracteristics, again compared to Irrlicht and Cyborg, but also with his next release: the guitar melody in the (unofficial, just in my head) Part One of Ways Of Changes, which is a great work and the vocals starting five minutes of Voices Of Syn,which, comparing to other vocal themes, used on further albums like Dune or Dosburg Online,I consider them one of the best from Schulze's work, regarding the flaoting with the concept of both the piece and the album Blackdance.

Recorded in August 1973 (shortly after Cyborg), Klaus Schulze's Picture Music was not released until January 1975.
Track 1 , 'Totem', is an ambient soundscape, a near 24 minute 'otherwordly' atmosphere created by Klaus, formed out of percussive synth sequences, and drifting synth chords. The equipment stated on the back cover is : an EMS Synth 3 - sounds, ARP odysee - strings/percussion and a Farfisa Organ, as well as an acoustic drums set-up, which brings us to the second track, 'Mental Door', which is a more energetic piece, starting with brooding organ chords and sweeping synth effects, building to a frenetic frenzy of lead synth and manic drumming.
You'll be amazed at the excitement this album generates.

"Timewind" from 1975 features two 30-minute epics dedicated to Richard Wagner."Bayreuth Return" was recorded by Klaus in his bedroom on just two tracks and in one go.
“Bayreuth Return” is an action-packed piece whereas “Wahnfried” focuses more on an ambiance feel. Only minor point is the ending of "Bayreuth" which kinda slams to a stop in a sudden massive wall of noise which makes one almost think that Klaus had to end the piece quickly, although like said it's only a minor point as the track remains a delight to listen to and is rightfully still considered a "Masterpiece". Morton Subotnick is one of the pioneers in the development of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The work which brought Subotnick celebrity was Silver Apples of the Moon. Written in 1967 using the Buchla modular synthesizer (an electronic instrument built by Donald Buchla utilizing suggestions from Subotnick and Ramon Sender), this work contains synthesized tone colors, striking for its day, and a control over pitch that many other contemporary electronic composers had relinquished. There is a rich counterpoint of gestures, in marked contrast to the simple surfaces of much contemporary electronic music. There are sections marked by very clear pulses, another unusual trait for its time; Silver Apples of the Moon was commissioned by Nonesuch Records, marking the first time an original large-scale composition had been created specifically for the disc medium - a conscious acknowledgment that the home stereo system constituted a present-day form of chamber music. Subotnick wrote this piece (and subsequent record company commissions) in two parts to correspond to the two sides of an LP. The exciting, exotic timbres and the dance inspiring rhythms caught the ear of the public -- the record was an American bestseller in the classical music category, an extremely unusual occurrence for any contemporary concert music at the time. Silver Apples Of The Moon was released on vinyl by Nonesuch ( H-71174, 9 71174-1 ) in 1967. In 1994 re-released on cd by WERGO (WER 2035-2) together with "The Wild Bull" album. About the cd : this release is closer to the original analog tape than the original vinyl release. This post is the vinyl release.

The band formed in 1979 in Fort Collins, Colorado as Mnemonist Orchestra (later Mnemonists) lead by Mark Debyshir and William Sharp and started recording albums on their own self-produced label, Dys. Around 1981 - 1982 they split into a visual arts group retaining the Mnemonists name and a musical group called Biota. This is there first lp in a thick hand glued cover limited to around 100 copies, and contains an 8 page insert with various art prints, not inclueded in the zip file, as it was not present in my copie. Released on vinyl by DYS (DYS 01) in 1979. Later re-released with "Some Attributes of a Living System" as a double vinyl by DYS (DYS 01/02) in 1984, under the name "Mnemonists".

Hujaboy's 'Black Belt' is contemporary, cutting edge Psy Tech Trance. Mature, tough, tight groovy music with edge and energy. No cheese, just direct, effective, modern day Psy electronica.
Desert Sun kicks off the album with a funky Psy Electro groove. Showing what talent Hujaboy has in trying his hand at the more contemporary minimal sounds around at the moment. He has obviously been listening to Trentemoller and the likes...and pulled off a great upfront and experimental track to start the album off that is still psychedelic and maintains the force and power that is a Hujaboy trademark. Holes in the sky moves towards a more traditional Psytrance sound, but with no unnecessary frills just clean, focused sounds and good beats, concentrating on what rocks a dance floor without the fluff! This in fact sets the tone for the rest of the album with Premium Delirium building on this with a kick and bass that could knock you flat against a wall! Acid revival retains the full frontal power of Hujaboy but brings an element of acid house into the groove. The result is a crowd pleaser. Already one of the biggest tracks in his current live set. Throughout, elements of old skool melodies along with cool lines and sounds evolve and are woven into a luscious groove. The title track Black Belt roughens things up with tough percussion that jumps out of the speakers. Sounds like it's just in front of your face like the back of Bruce Lee's hand! Enter the Hujaboy!
Clarity and precision are the name of the game in 'Black Belt', no nonsense bass driven dance floor damaging Psytrance! Get into the Groove!

Electro 7 are an interesting mixed bag ofmadness.
A Mexican, Cuban and Italian combine tocreate the sounds of Cuba merged withPsychedelic Electronica, Reggae, Hip Hop andDrum and Bass and then twisted into popmusic!
Electro 7 have been around a few years but itwasn't until band leader Dr Panic (Melovskys)hooked up with long time friend andtraditional Cuban musician, Raul Oviedo, thattheir sound started to take shape. They thenbought in pop producer Paolo Marcellini andthe band was complete. All three have beenvery busy session and touring musicians orhad other band projects taking up their timebut in the last year the focus has been onthis exciting new band and they are quicklypicking up a fan base in Mexico and majorlabel interest throughout America.
The idea behind the band is to createsoulful, contemporary Cuban music whileexperimenting with electronic sounds. Afusion of different cultures in music thatwhen blended would give something completelynew and rewarding. The sound is still veryauthentic and at times is pure Cuban 'Son'and it really hits the spot. But when DrPanic adds his skills from his technoproduction experience, what we are left withis a very fresh sound that is an amazing mixof exotic latin rhythms and vocals from sunbleached, rum soaked Havana back streets withcool, contemporary, electronic, urban soundsfrom Mexico City's burgeoning dance musicculture.
So light up a Cohiba, order a Mojito, put thecd on and turn it up. Electro 7 are thesoundtrack for your summer. This is theHabana-delic Gozadera Expereience.

Released in 1968 on Polydor. Fairport Convention's debut album owes more to the Byrds than to Pentangle, with soaring harmonies and psychedelic guitars. Produced by the fantastic Joe Boyd.
This is the only Fairport Convention studio album to feature Judy Dyble. She was replaced in 1968 by Sandy Denny, but during her short time with the band she managed to make a noticeable impression, particularly through her on-stage habit of knitting socks and scarves when not actually singing. Judy Dyble sang like a siren and then left to form Trader Horne.
Personnel
Judy Dyble - lead vocals, electric and acoustic autoharps, recorder, piano
Ian MacDonald - lead vocals, Jew's harp
Richard Thompson - vocals, lead electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin
Simon Nicol - vocals, electric 12 and 6 string and acoustic guitars
Ashley Hutchings - bass guitar, jug
Martin Lamble - Percussion, violin

Earth and Fire were one of the leading Dutch progressive rock groups with female singers. They had a powerful sound and their strong compositions were always based in inspired and highly memorable melodies. Their debut-album is progressive rock in a less symphonic and slightly rougher vein than later albums. There was no Mellotron in their sound yet, but Gerard Koerts' excellent use of flute, organ and vibes took well care of the band's progressive sound already in this state of their career.
This astounding album comes complete with a fantastic Roger Dean-designed sleeve. Copies are virtually impossible to find, as it was one of the first major rarities to become popular with collectors.

herodian,
Go ahead and reccomend your band, my friend - I am not a Black Metal fan at all (I love Mortiis' ambient work after he left Emperor).
I'd love to hear your work!

just going back over some tunes.
Peccatum: Oh My Regrets
awesome, hair raising epic cheese from Ihsahn and the Missus with a FANTASTIC Judas Priest cover.
I recommend Oh My Regrets and Amor Fati. Bit metal in places, but more often not.
On that line though... try StarofAsh: Ihriels band. again, awesome.

I'm just listening to that "and the wolves hid their teeth" compilation, very nice, a little reminiscent of David Sylvian IMO.
Have you heard "Plight and Premonition" from David Sylvian and Holger Czukay ?
Great to see some "Dead can Dance" discs there, I'm only familiar with "Serpents Egg", love that, can't wait to hear some others.
My contribution to this genre would be "Talk Talk", a band with dubious pop beginnings but who became really top notch, try "Spirit of Eden", the first track is great when you're flying,
Cheers
