By turns, steely, truculent and strangely beautiful, this collaboration between Wire/Dome mage Bruce Gilbert, Loop/Main's Robert Hampson and Paul Kendall (principally known as Mute Records' in-house producer) is a forgotten gem of guitar based experimentation, though the combination of extreme processing and mechanistic structuring of much of this renders "Orr" distinct from most displays of avant axe work. Yes, it's often severe and rigorous stuff, but it's not absent moments of plangent radiance, "Us" in particular exuding a strong whiff of krautrocker Gunter Schickert's trance/chug comeliness. Elsewhere, the shearing relentlessness gives way to a sort of frosty isolationism that was so in the air circa the mid 90's. Strong medicine.
