Hey BB,
I just noticed in your profile that you like Muay Thai, kind of didn't think you would be into that. I have seem some Thai boxing matches in several run down bar rings in Thailand and enjoyed it, but it is a pretty brutal life for the fighters. Do you get to see many matches in Oz?

Hey Oldbay...we have some of the top fighters and trainers here in Oz - John Wayne Parr, Paul Slowinski, Scott Bannan, Nugget, to name a few....my teacher Nick Kara is a former world ISKA champion and even appears in Ong Bak as 'Big Bear' so we have some great fighters here and we have some good fights but mainly more up north in QLD where the weather is warmer and it's easier to train for longer....

Do you also train in fighting?

I'm very much into Muay Thai precisely for it's level of contact and aggression...I'm certainly not the type to do the more conventional sports like tennis, netball, swimming or even a tae-bo class! I enjoy getting physical and fighting :)

I've been training in Muay Thai for 6-7 years and have had 3 competitive fights (2 wins, 1 draw) but recently I've been training in a Russian martial art called Systema (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systema)- a fighting system used by the Russian Special Forces and Spetsnaz - much more brutal than even Muay Thai! I have just done a 3-day workshop this weekend, training 7 hours a day straight with a guy flown in from Serbia who has even trained the Russian military in it's use. Check him (Alex) and some other vids out of this 'martial art' here:

Wow...That is some rough play :) Looks like fun though! I like the practical side of martial arts, like coming up against brawlers and still having the moves to take me down. Looks like the perfect one for that ;) Also looks loose like JKD, adding and subtracting techniques to suit the sensai.

I like Muay Thai. It's wrong for my body type...Sparring against kick boxers used to really get you sharp. Go too close and they'll cling on and pound your ribs, stay too far and your getting snapped or hammered by long legs. Grrrr...Found that more grappling techniques were good against them though, and the locks were great too :) But, generally, the continuous fast movements were great to practice against, great bluffing moves too.

Well you never seem to stop impressing me with your choices and dedications in life.

I do not practice any martial arts. I lost a lot of them in my school days as I was a bit too outspoken for my own good. When I took Karate classes or whatever practice they were, my intentions weren't right. It was more a play on karate kid than seeing it as an art and life habit.
I do yoga pretty regularly, and I stand by it. I have a desk job for the most part so it keeps me from turning into a complete marsh mallow as well as the mental benefits. I am pretty big on Mountain Biking (though it is mostly wooded trails as it is pretty flat terrain here), Canoe, hike etc... Just being in the woods.
