As I read about Russia rolling through Georgia, I was struck by this thought. How lucky is the United States to have such a cool neighbor (and supplier of oil) as Canada? Think of how much simpler life in Europe (and how much suckier for the US) if Canada and Russia switched places?

Largest peaceful border in the world. Margaret Thatcher notes that the peaceful borders America enjoys has enabled much of the country's success. And Canada leads the way on pot reform! So here's to Canada, a great neighbor and home to many of many good friends. I've GOT to get to VC someday!

As to whether the US is an equally good neighbor may be arguable, but you wouldn't trade us for most countries (Russia, England or France, even Mexico?) and we are a great market and do provide a lot of defense you you don't have to. Sure, you'd trade us in a heartbeat for the Netherlands, but so would the US ;). But the US is wrong on the soft lumber thing. I'd change that if I could, that ain't right.

I kid because I love. Here's two Canadian jokes:

How do you make a Canadian apologize? Step on his foot.

How do Canadians spell it? c-A-n-A-d-A!

Thanks for the compliment. We are also lucky to have the U.S. as a neighbour and trade partner.

Sorry about that :D

Thanks Pete you made my favorite post of the day. The reason for both nations co-exsistance is because niether nation could survive without each other. We need America's big army. You need our oil. We actually export more oil than we keep and no other nation on earth sends more oil to the US than Canada. Also generations of Canadians have lived, worked in the US and vice versa. While we share many a many common culture through TV our diffrences are slightly below the surface. It's a we won't bother you if you don't bother us kind of attitude. Where as the Sates is "what are they doing over there?" Kinda deal.

Peace, Order, and Good Government are the ideals which we hold true to our constitution. It's why we have progressive policies on cannabis because most Canadians know the truth about weed. Were also the most wired nation in the world. IF you can't get access to the internet for free there you most likley in the northern territories.

That being said the only reason why we still have cannabis prohibition in this country is because of how upset the powers that be down south would have. So if america federally allowed state legal marijuana (Recreational or Medicinal) I can gaurntee you within 5 years prohibition will have ended.

Glad you put it in that kind of context pete. Russia invading Georgia has made me worry a lot because we share northern border with them. They have also tried to lay claim to some of our northern islands and so far with the North West passage opening up this could provoke Russia to take a piece of the action. Despite all that I hate about Harper you have to give him props for making Northern sovereignty an issue. If we loose the Northwest passage it would greatly endanger our nation.

and if you should grace VC with your presance then by all means shoot me an email.

Sorry for being opionated. :D

My pleasure, :) Hudsonrulez. I've friends (via a common hobby) but they aren't embibers, so I certainly will give a shout if my wife and I make it up VC way. I hear it is a beautiful city. I've threatened to move there, as I can work from anywhere. I hear housing is quite expensive but it is otherwise a great place to live.

yea within the city of toronto itself is expensive. The farther you go from Toronto the cheaper it is. A typical one bedroom apartment in the City of Hamilton (which is the biggest city closest to Toronto with a 1.5hr drive) cost me 600 dollars. Your luck to find bachelors at 800 in Toronto. But its a great place to live. I live within 30 minutes (if no traffic) of the downtown core and you can find decent cheap places to live in my immediate area.
