Can I put a 400W bulb in a 100W ballast? I want a larger ballast for later expansion, but only need 400w for my current setup.

Thanks

Hi Nube40,

In a word, NO.

These HID bulbs create a plasma arc (a lightning bolt is a plasma arc) inside the tube that generates the light. This requires a sequence of voltages being fed to the bulb at the correct time. The bulb requires a high voltage, over 1000volts for an HPS, to get the arc started. Then requires a a lower voltage / current profile to run the bulb. These values are different for different wattage bulbs.

It could be dangerous to stick a smaller bulb in a large ballast. At the least, you'll probably trash the bulb.

IMO keep the 1kw bulb/ballast. just stick more plants under it. With a little effort, you could get a pound from a 1kw bulb.

But I have a small room and am worried about heat / electricity. If they are not interchangable like incandessants, then I might need to just get a 400 which is more than enough for the room. I think????

I use 400W setups. I'd say a 400W is just, barely, enough for 4 plants. And, if the plants are tall you will need to tie them down.

One good way to start is to get the 400. Then, as needed add a second 400 to the room. It's a really nice way to go as 800W may be too hot in the summer. And, in the winter, u can grow some nice bushes under 2 400W setups.

I think you might be right. I am only growing one or two at a time until I get my technique down, so 400 is probably enough and I could always add a second 400 if I need it. That will keep the energy bill in check while I experiment.

Thanks Again

400w is a nice starter lamp. I have one for vegging. Please pay attention to the warning, and DO NOT mix ballasts and lamps of different ratings.

Good idea to start small. I always felt that you could get as much yield out of 2 plants allowed to grow into a space, than 4 plants crammed together, without proper airflow...

Peace

yeah I know this is right. Its too tempting not to stick 2 more plants under there for me though

LOL I hear you stoned face...I have 4 in the flower room and a tub full of several varities of clones. I have been tempted to add 2-3 more, but I think I am going to put 3-4 small AK clones in my dutch leach trays on a shelve, since I can keep them smaller. That is an option...go vertical...
