Greetings Friends and Advocates –

First, the not so good news.

LA - Many of you have requested to see the current draft regulations and learn more about the process of the City’s Medical Marijuana Working Group. We last met in October and were to have our next meeting this Thursday, December 6, 2007. Prior to this meeting we were to all receive an electronic copy of our most recent working draft. However, at the eleventh hour, advocates did NOT receive a draft and the working group meetings have been permanently cancelled by city officials.

The working group had only begun to touch on the toughest issues of this ordinance leaving us all in doubt of the city’s intentions. If the draft we discussed in October is the one that the city is going to go with – this will threaten safe access in the city of Los Angeles. Please see the draft attached.

The person who announced to us last Wednesday that the Thursday meeting and all subsequent meetings were cancelled, an Alan Bell, is someone who has not even attended our meetings. It has taken most other cities nearly a year of group meetings to come up with a good working draft. You can reach Alan with your questions and concerns at:

The better news.

SF - You may have seen or heard of the recent SF Chronicle article entitled DEA moves to pull pot out from under San Francisco landlords Phillip Matier, 12/05/07. The DEA in the Northern District of CA was quoted in the paper as acknowledging that every collective in NorCal was going to receive a landlord threat letter. No, not good news. But fortunately advocates immediately mobilized supportive elected officials for an emergency press conference that took place today. See attached press release.

As a result of efforts by Patient Advocacy Network and Axis of Love San Francisco we were able to get some action from Congress. Nancy Pelosi’s district aid came down to the press conference and read a statement by Congressman John Conyers, Jr., chair of the house judiciary committee.
The full text will be posted later tonight but the gist of the message was that his office is questioning this tactic of “threatening legal medical marijuana dispensaries.”

Although I do not expect that this is going to create a lot movement immediately at least recognizing our dispensaries as legal entities in our state is good rhetoric. We appear to have the ear of the judiciary committee - hopefully, a tiny step closer to opening congressional hearings and removing cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act. PAN and Axis of Love SF have had to push very hard to get Pelosi’s office to see that there is a real threat to California and her constituents.

Statewide - PAN has been very busy providing trainings and workshops throughout California!! Patients and advocates want to know how to stay safe and engage the democratic process during this turbulent time. Is your favorite dispensary hosting a PAN training? Why not!?

The end the year is almost here. Have you made a tax-deductible donation to PAN? We survive only on your donations. We are completely funded by the support from people just like you - keeping education and advocacy alive in LA. We’re cultivating knowledge and understanding.

Truly yours,
